I spent part of the day listening to the Miracles for Kids Radiothon, which is a major fundraiser for the MU Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Andy and I already donate $100 per month to the Children’s Miracle Network and the hospital. We’ve been doing this for years. BEFORE we even had kids. When we started our donations, it was because we had several sets of friends with kids. We hoped none of them would ever need the hospital, but if they did, maybe our small donation of $1200 a year would make a difference. Then, we had kids and we have been blessed with not needing that hospital. Yes, Laura went to the ER for a nasty bump on the head and John had tubes put in his ears, but we’ve never NEEDED the hospital. Not in the way the families I heard about today and in past radiothons have needed the hospital. The stories of Cancer, Cystic Fibrosis, Cerebral Palsy, Accidents, and more all touch that part of my heart that brings tears to my eyes every time. It reminds me that Andy and I are very blessed. We have healthy kids. Beautiful. Healthy. Kids. I can’t even begin to say how thankful I am for that. The children who are the centerpiece of the stories I heard today are miracles and their families are amazing. If our small donation can help even one of them, then every penny of it is worth it. The selfish side of me prays that we never need the Children’s Miracle Network any more than we already have needed it. The giving side of me wishes I could give them every last dime of what I make every year. Those sick children deserve life without illness. They truly ARE miracles.
Go Mizzou!
Could it be?
Sick Day
I woke up this morning feeling terrible, so I decide to stay home. An hour later, John wakes up obviously feeling terrible, so now he is staying home with me. Since I had to take care of a sick boy that means Mommy has to put aside being sick. This morning was difficult to say the least. John was very whiny and tired. He sat snuggled next to me for an hour and sobbed on and off. He finally fell asleep around 10 am. He slept about an hour and woke up wanting to eat. After lunch, he watched an episode of “Dora the Explorer” and then I put him down for a nap. To my surprise, he did not protest and was asleep before I left his room. He slept for three hours and woke up at about 3:15 pm completely refreshed and seemingly recovered. The picture is John playing and full of smiles after nap time! He’s still doing well and, hopefully, he’ll return to daycare tomorrow as I’m fairly certain that it is Daddy’s turn to be sick.
Oh, how am I feeling, you ask? I’m good, so it’s back to work for me tomorrow! Amazing how well mind over matter can work sometimes.
Back to Columbia
We had a great weekend visiting family and friends! We don’t get back there enough, but it’s so hard these days. Travel with kids is a production, and a big one at that. Thanks to Chuck and Karen Gilbert for letting us stay at their house. We all had a great time and the kids loved playing with McDonough, the “fun puppy” as John said. We ate some great food, had great conversations, and enjoyed looking for eagles in their yard. We tried to get a picture of the kids with Chuck and Karen, but Laura and John had other plans. So, we just took a picture of Chuck and Karen and McDonough’s head. All in all, it was a fun weekend and I’m glad we went!
Visit to Astoria
We went to visit Grandma Marianne and Grandpa Ralph in Astoria. The kids were extremely excited to see everyone and they played with their cousin, Thomas, for quite a while. We had pizza for lunch, chatted a lot, and the kids got to have Christmas in February. John got more Matchbox cars and a puzzle. Laura got a Crayola coloring kit. Both kids got a large Toy Story coloring/sticker book. It was really great to see everyone and we really enjoyed ourselves!
To Illinois We Go
Since Laura did not have school today because it was a teacher workday, we headed to Illinois to visit family and friends. We stayed in Nauvoo, IL, at Chuck and Karen Gilbert’s home. Laura was very excited to discover that Chuck has an iPad. She said, “I’ll show you how to use it.” The two of them sat down and played Solitaire.
We had a great afternoon and evening filled with food, drinks, and conversation. It was very relaxing and exactly what we all needed. We even headed to bed early, but it was great to catch up on sleep and know that we had nothing to do all weekend except visit people.
