On the advice of John’s counselor, we had him tested for ADHD. Today, we received a positive diagnosis. He has the inattentive kind, which certainly explains a lot about his behavior over the years. The doctor will produce a report over the next few weeks with recommendations for treatment. While I am relieved to know that we have some answers, I also feel like he has been cheated along the way. We asked teachers and other school staff many times when he was younger if they thought he had a learning disability or some other issue. All said that he was young for his class and a boy. I wonder if his school years could have been different if someone had just listened. However, he is a compliant, nice kid that is not hyperactive, and they are often overlooked for ADHD. We do know now though, so maybe treatment will help for his college years and into adulthood.
