Daddy and Laura bought a reading lamp for Laura’s bed today while at Home Depot. She was so excited to read while hanging out on her bed. So excited, in fact, that she read for over an hour after going to bed tonight. This kept John awake until after 9, causing him to storm out of their bedroom to tell me that the lamp was “bothering” him and “inerrupting” his sleep. I had to cut off the bedtime reading for the night, but it is great to see Laura so excited!
Summer Bingo!
Laura knocked out some more items on her Summer Bingo project today. After lunch at China Garden with Daddy and Greg, they headed to the Daniel Boone Regional Library to cross that one off her list (along with the one for “Read a book by Eric Carle”). Laura was especially excited to show me her very own library card and the four books she checked out.
By then end of today, Laura has 13 of the 25 items crossed off her Bingo card. I think she will complete another 4 to 5 items this week. The rest will take a bit of time, but Laura is determined to finish them all so that she can get that prize. Go Laura!
Memorial Day
It was a disappointing beginning to our day. The Salute to Veterans Parade was cancelled due to the impending weather. To say that John was very sad would be an understatement. We did get to see one plane from the airshow flying around downtown so that helped a little bit. We also met up with Andrea and Kathryn at McDonald’s for a little Play Place time. When all other distraction fails, let the kids expend some energy… It started to rain a little bit on our way home from McDonald’s and it didn’t take long for us to see why the parade was cancelled. It was quite a downpour complete with hail. It looked like we had Niagara Falls in our backyard.
Because the kids couldn’t go outside, Laura took the opportunity to start working on her “Summer Bingo” for school. If she completes all the items over the summer and returns the form back to school, she will get a prize. By the end of today, she had completed 9 of the 25 items.
Because it was raining, we took the opportunity to make John take a nap. He was exhausted after two busy, busy days. You know he was tired because he didn’t argue about taking a nap. He obviously needed it because he slept for three full hours.
Most of the day was spent doing very little. It was quite a relaxing day, but somewhat of a foreign concept. A weekend day with nothing to do at the Kassel Household?!? How weird is that? I am not complaining though and I am very much looking forward to the shortened work week.
Summer Can Begin!
We had our annual Memorial Day Weekend barbecue this evening. Great old friends along with some new friends were here to enjoy the “beginning” of summer. It rained a LOT (story of our spring), but we still managed to have a great time! How could we not with the great friends that we have? 🙂 Great food, great conversation, and lots of laughs filled up our night.
It was sort of an impromptu birthday party as it was Greg’s 50th Birthday and my 40th Birthday is Thursday. Beth gave me a kickin’ sash and a super fun wine glass and also brought along a super tasty ice cream cake.
It was a late evening, but lots of fun! It was the perfect way to start off summer!
Salute to Veterans Airshow!
Despite a very rainy start to the morning and us deciding at one point that we would not go today (or basically this year because we are busy all day tomorrow), we finally made it out to the Salute to Veterans Airshow about noon. Are we glad that we did! Despite being windy, it was perfect weather – almost chilly! That is a far cry from past years where the temperature has been into the 90s and made even hotter by the tarmac concrete. Because of the rainy morning and wind, the airshow schedule was modified, but we still got to see a lot of airplanes in the air and on static display. I think this was the first year that John really “got it.” He was so excited about all the planes and he almost couldn’t decide what to do first. The highlights this year were the Kansas City Air Dawn Patrol flying the World War I replica planes and the AeroShell Aerobatic Team. It was just a great time and worth our sunburns!
Memorial Day Weekend Begins!
It’s the beginning of Memorial Day weekend! It will be a busy, fun weekend and I’m really looking forward to it. The day began with an actual ending… It is Laura’s last day of Unit A/First Grade. It’s hard to believe that when she gets off the bus this afternoon, she will be a Second Grader! These past two years just went so fast! I can’t believe that she will be seven this summer… Oh, Baby Laura, where has the time gone?!?
We spent the evening at a 50th Birthday Party for a great friend, Greg Van Hove. (Special thanks to Keith and Andrea for watching our kiddos!) We went to the Victorian Country Inn for a Chuck Wagon dinner. Our stage coach got robbed! It was a unique, beautiful evening and we had a great time! The food was amazing. Everything was cooked over a fire and the Chicken and Dumplings was absolutely fantastic. I do have to say that the Chocolate Cake trumped the Chicken and Dumplings and *that* is saying a lot! We were glad to help Greg celebrate his 50th birthday on such a beautiful evening with great friends. It was perfect!
