Today is an exciting day. After spending the night in St. Joseph, MO, with Jeremy at his mom’s house (big thank you to them!), we headed for Kansas City International Airport at 6:15 am. We got checked in and went through security. It was an easy process and the kids loved every minute of it. We waited about 45 minutes and then boarded the airplane for the flight to San Diego, California. The kids were very excited for their first airplane flight!
It was an uneventful, smooth flight. We landed in San Diego shortly before 10 am and collected our bags. We took the shuttle to our hotel and, despite it being early, we got to go ahead and check in. We unpacked a bit and then did some exploring of the hotel and surrounding area. This fountain was behind our hotel.
We walked across the street to the bay. We could see downtown San Diego and Naval Base San Diego. It was a beautiful view.
After lunch, we headed back to our room to change into our swimsuits. I walked onto our balcony and saw this…
The USS John C. Stennis! I called the rest of the family out onto the balcony and the kids were just amazed to see the aircraft carrier making its way to Naval Base San Diego. Keep in mind that I did not use the zoom on my camera to take this picture… Yes, the USS John C. Stennis is that large.
We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing by the pool. Andy and I drank a margarita (or two), talked to some other Sigma Chis that were there early, and the kids swam the afternoon away.
Towards the end of our time in the pool, we saw some ducklings wandering around. One of them got scared and jumped into the pool. The other three ducklings and Momma duck followed. People were trying to figure out how to get them out of the pool when one of the hotel employees got out a lounge chair. He placed it in the pool, making a ramp. The ducks swam over to the chair and climbed right out. Afterwards, we noticed a sign on that particular chair that said “Do Not Use – Duckling Ramp.” Funny!
Andy had a dinner that evening as part of Sigma Chi Grand Chapter so the kids and I got pizza and sandwiches from a nearby restaurant for dinner. We ate in the room and relaxed while watching television and movies. The kids fell asleep pretty quickly and I *think* the first day of vacation wore them out…
